The Intoxilyzer 8000 is Manufactured in the UK?

Did you take a breath test after your arrest for DUI in Florida? If so, you probably do not know much about how the breath test machine actually works. You will probably be surprised to learn that neither does the State of Florida who purchased the machines for approximately $8,000.00 each. The courts have called them the “mysterious machines.” In fact they are so mysterious, we do not even know for sure where the Intoxilyzer 8000 machines are produced, manufactured, or assembled.

Interesting additional evidence that CMI, Inc., in Owensboro, Kentucky, does not “manufacture” the Intoxilyzer 8000. The final seven page version of the “Intoxilyzer 8000 Instrument Specifications” (marked “CMI Company Confidential”) provides that the instrument “is capable of being produced in the US or in the UK.”

Is it possible that the employees at  Lion Laboratories Limited in the UK simply box up the machines and send them to the CMI, Inc., facility in Owensboro, Kentucky, where they are repackaged before being shipped out to various law enforcement agencies throughout the United States?

If the hardware for the machines are not “produced” in the United States, what do you think the chances are that the source code and Florida specific software is also “produced” overseas. Just why are these machines so mysterious?

So what do you think – Is the Intoxilyzer 8000 proudly made in the USA?
